Some women in Sydney are resorting to expensive and painful thermage treatments for anti aging - but is thermage really necessary for the average woman?
According to Sia Hendry of Sydney's Laser By Sia, the answer is no.
"For those suffering from severe acne scars, very deep wrinkles and sagging caused by quick weight loss, there can be benefits to undertaking thermage treatment," Sia explains.
"But for most women who are concerned about the wrinkles, sagging and age spots caused by normal aging, as well as those suffering from mild acne scars, you really do not need to resort to thermage."
Thermage is a skin tightening treatment that uses radio frequency energy to tighten loose or sagging skin. The frequency energy heats the dermis, or inner layer of skin, while cooling and protecting the outer layers. Thermage skin tightening is designed to tighten deeper layers of skin by stimulating collagen production in the dermis.
"This treatment is effective because the heat stimulates collagen in the dermis. But thermage is very painful, has a long recovery period and thermage treatments in Sydney cost many thousands of dollars," Sia says.
"What many people considering thermage don't know is, there is an array of other skin tightening and anti wrinkle treatments available that are just as effective, cheaper and include little to no recovery time at all."
Sia says these wrinkle treatments include peels, ultrasonic, light therapy and laser hyperpigmentation removal.
"Like thermage, a skin tightening treatment must restore firmness to the skin by boosting collagen in the dermis," she explains.
So what are these other skin tightening treatments?
Medi Light Therapy
Medi light therapy uses wavelengths of light to increase circulation and the supply of oxygen in the skin, speeding up regeneration by supplying additional nutrients. Much like thermage, light therapy increases collagen synthesis and cellular growth. It also improves lymphatic drainage and stimulates the growth of connective tissue.
Ultrasonic
Ultrasonic Treatment utilises sonic vibrations, which oscillate thousands of times per second, to lift dead skin cells and improve circulation. The ultrasonic waves stimulate skin tissue and improve the permeability of the skin cell membrane so that peels and medical-grade skin care can penetrate more deeply and infuse additional nutrients into the dermis.
Peels
Thermage uses heat to create a wound to the skin, stimulating collagen. Peels do much the same without heat or chemicals. All natural peels are replacing the chemical peels of old. Using new customised, non-chemical peel infusions, it is possible to reach down to the dermis, stimulating collagen and elastin for skin firming and wrinkle and scar reduction.
Laser
Laser treatments are used to remove age spots from the face and body. In newer technologies, an exact wavelength of light is used to reach into the dermis, attach to the excess pigment in the skin and destroy it. Unlike older laser technologies, such as IPL, this exact wavelength means the laser cannot burn or leave scarring and can be used to treat darker skin tones. Like thermage, the heat in the laser stimulates collagen for tightening.
"These skin tightening treatments will work in unison over time to reduce scarring, wrinkles and refirm contours - without the thermage pain, downtime or prices," Sia says.
"Best of all, all of these
skin tightening treatments are now available in Sydney."
